INK MAGAZINE

I discovered VCU’s culture and arts publication, Ink Magazine on a college visit when I was in high school. Captured by the unique perspective and alternative aesthetic, I made it my goal to join the publication when I came to VCUarts to study fashion merchandising.

I began as a general staff member in the fall of 2018 and was quickly promoted to Junior Fashion Editor. In 2019 I became the Senior Fashion Editor and spent my last year and a half in college as the Managing Editor of the magazine.

Ink Magazine has consistently been awarded for it’s excellence including the Society of Professional Journalism’s 2019 Mark of Excellence contest for Region 2.

CHELO CHELO ZINE

Chelo Chelo (Halo halo + Chè) is a zine that centers around the work of Southeast Asian American (SEAA) creators. Within the diaspora of Asian Americans, Southeast Asians have historically resided on the sidelines of mainstream culture. The mission of Chelo Chelo is to bring together Southeast Asian American artists and creatives raising awareness issues we face and ultimately to champion Southeast Asian American creativity.

The concept of Chelo Chelo was conceived on a bubble tea outing with fellow SEAA friends. We expressed our longing for a space that highlighted Southeast Asian work and contributions, in world that so often promotes a monolithic representation of Asians. I brought together a team of other SEAA students including writers, copyeditors, and graphic designers to pitch our idea to the Anderson Publishing Grant competition.

To our surprise we won the Anderson Publishing Grant which would fund our launch! I dedicated my time to managing marketing, financials, and e-mail correspondence while maintaining the role of Editor-in-Chief.

DESIGN

While I am not a designer myself I made it a point to be involved in every part of the process of creating Chelo Chelo. I really wanted to give our design team (Archerd Aparejo, Sophie Nguyen, and Kristi Huynh) creative liberty to interpret our theme. I was present in all design meetings giving feed back and taking notes for us to use in the design process.

The issue which was titled Hybrid Identity, leaned into the overlapping elements of Southeast Asian cultures through SEAA diaspora motifs such as common grocery items.

CONTENT MANAGEMENT & Copyediting

Keeping highly detailed track of the content, its progress, and all of it’s components was part of my strategy to keep make sure we had all bases covered before going to print.

During this time (June-July 2020) I was also simultaneously handling all email correspondents with interviewees, artists who submitted work, and the Anderson Gallery who funded the project.

One of the most important aspects of my work as Editor-in-Chief was to make sure every article was given a thoughtful read through where I gave constructive feedback to team members. For example, writer David Tran and I worked together for weeks perfecting the tone and structure of one of his pieces.

the final product

We went to print twice before getting the final draft which we released. We wanted to make sure every detail from readability, spacing, grammar, and tone felt right.

We printed over 50 copies and sold out completely within a couple of weeks of the release date. Customers came from all around the country and expressed their excitement about the project and how it highlighted SEAA identity.
